Oswald
OSWALD’S STORY told by Geoff Page (Son of Reginald Page) Transcribed by Meta Forward

All the men were away from home. Oswald, born on June 8th 1887, and aged only sixteen at the time took the gun and went down to the creek, where the one way bridge on Glen Road is today. His intention was to fall a young tree to cut up into blocks for chopping practice (his older brother Reg., Geoff’s father, later became a champion axeman). While he was dealing with the tree, he propped the gun against a log, barrel up. When the tree started to fall the wrong way Oswald leapt back over the log. He snagged the trigger, the gun went off and shot him in the stomach.

He crawled home, holding his intestines in place as well as he could, and knocked to bring his mother to the door. In a time of no ambulances and more primitive medical services, the boy died of his wounds on Sept 29th 1903. Official cause “peritonitis”.

DEATH reported in The Mercury, 30 September 1903

PAGE.-On September 28, 1903, at his parents' residence, Ranelagh Junction, Huonville, Oswald, the dearly beloved second son of Arthur John Page, aged 17 years and 3 months.

IN MEMORIAM reported in The Mercury, 30 September 1903

PAGE. - In loving remembrance of our dear son, Oswald Page, who died September 29, 1903, at Ranelagh.
Suddenly, just in a moment,
The Lord of Life did come,
And lifted me out of the cloud-land
Into the light of home
We laid his hands down by his side,
And kissed his cold, cold brow, And in our aching hearts we knew
We have no Oswald now.
Inserted by his loving Father and Mother, and Family.

Oral History as told by Marlene Burles

Arthur John Page was presented with Family Bible.

Inscription in Bible says:
Presented to Arthur John Page 12 March 1885 by Father Sam Page snr.

Marriage notes in Bible of Arthur John and Rose Emma Oates state that witnesses were Florence Page and Rowland Page. Sister and brother to A.J.Page.
My pa (Cecil George Page) told me that a flood came all over the Glen farm at Ranelagh and washed away all the top soil and farm was sold for far less than its worth! Arthur John then moved to "Cloverside". Truganini was at this farm at some stage. ( Have not checked dates to verify this!)
Amelia (Page) Green was changing her clothes to catch bus to Hobart to visit her sister Florence Walton when she suffered heart attack!

Cecil George Page leased a property (known as Newman's Hill, now known as "Bennett's Hill")
Melva was 11 years old so it would have been around 1928. The girls walked from this farm to the school at the Village Green, Ranelagh.
Cecil George Page farmed with a team of bullocks with very large horns. They were called Blackie, Brandy, Darkie and Live.
He left the farm and went to Lonnavale sawmilling for brother Reginald.
Later he set up his own sawmill bench.

Cecil George Page had been next door to Melva wanting to know who won the football. He picked up a piece of cauliflower (Marlene was present) and went out front door munching his raw cauliflower. He went to ensure that a piece of ground was ready to rotary hoe the next day. Marlene went home (across road) got half way up lawn heard Nan yell "come quick". Marlene turned to run to her but Melva heard the screams and got there before her. Pa had had a heart attack and died as he got inside. His hobbies were hunting and fishing.

Cecil George Page is buried in Uniting Church Cemetery at Judbury with his wife. Son, Cecil Ashley Page is buried next to them.

Charlie was "born different" and it was thought to be caused by the effect on Rose Emma of Oswald’s tragic death.
